چکیده

We further study the properties of the back and forth error compensation and correction (BFECC) method for advection equations such as those related to the level set method and for solving Hamilton-Jacobi equations on unstructured meshes. In particular, we develop a new limiting strategy which requires another backward advection in time so that overshoots/undershoots on the new time level get exposed when they are transformed back to compare with the solution on the old time level. This new technique is very simple to implement even for unstructured meshes and is able to eliminate artifacts induced by jump discontinuities in derivatives of the solution as well as by jump discontinuities in the solution itself (even if the solution has large gradients in the vicinities of a jump). Typically, a formal second order method method for solving a time dependent Hamilton-Jacobi equation requires quadratic interpolation in space. A BFECC method on the other hand only requires linear interpolation in each step, thus is local and easy to implement even for unstructured meshes.

An Unconditionally Stable MacCormack Method

The back and forth error compensation and correction (BFECC) method advects the solution forward and then backward in time. The result is compared to the original data to estimate the error. Although inappropriate for parabolic and other nonreversible partial differential equations, it is useful for often troublesome advection terms. The error estimate is used to correct the data before advecti...

Bernoulli collocation method with residual correction for solving integral-algebraic equations

The principal aim of this paper is to serve the numerical solution of an integral-algebraic equation (IAE) by using the Bernoulli polynomials and the residual correction method. After implementation of our scheme, the main problem would be transformed into a system of algebraic equations such that its solutions are the unknown Bernoulli coefficients. This method gives an analytic solution when ...

Preconditioned Generalized Minimal Residual Method for Solving Fractional Advection-Diffusion Equation

Introduction Fractional differential equations (FDEs)  have  attracted much attention and have been widely used in the fields of finance, physics, image processing, and biology, etc. It is not always possible to find an analytical solution for such equations. The approximate solution or numerical scheme  may be a good approach, particularly, the schemes in numerical linear algebra for solving ...

FlowFixer: Using BFECC for Fluid Simulation

Back and Forth Error Compensation and Correction (BFECC) was recently developed for interface computation by using the level set method. We show that it can be applied to reduce dissipation and diffusion encountered in various advection steps in fluid simulation such as velocity, smoke density and image advections. BFECC can be implemented easily on top of the first order upwinding or semi-Lagr...
